With 13 contestants remaining, drama ensues when jealousy creeps into the Model House right after a unique dance improvisation challenge that spells disaster for some, followed by a photo shoot to smile about. But an unexpected appearance from the ever-sassy Creative Director, Yu Tsai, at the judging panel puts additional pressure on the models to prove that they have what it takes to be Asia’s Next Top Model.

The Girl Who Got Up & Walked Again: Asia’s Next Top Model Cycle 5 Episode 1 Recap

Last time I asked you for your favorite photo from Episode 1, and here are the results 👏

The girls get home after deliberation and see that Anjelica left the girls a message, especially for the “bad girls room” including Alicia and Nametha (Anjelica misspelled her name as “Namita” LOL). It seems Alicia really grew close as a friend to Anjelica and she’s really upset that she’s gone already, and at the same time worried for her standing in the competition.

Jennica and Dorothy are gossiping over how some of the girls are being fake. Oh, it’s one girl in particular: they’re talking about Maureen. “It takes zero dollars to be real.” DRAMA!

Challenge: Contemporary Dance

The girls have to choreograph a group number in just half an hour. Jennica and Dorothy are confident having danced when they were younger. The top 3 girls from last week, Clara, Valerie, and Maureen get to pick their group mates. Cara gave a keyword that each team has to interpret through contemporary dance.

• Pure: Clara, Jennica, Alicia, Heidi
• Posh: Valerie, Veronika, Tu, Cindy
• Adorable: Maureen, Dorothy, Shikin, Layla, Nametha [the last 2 automatically went to this team]

Nametha comments how “pure” is such a mismatch of a theme to Clara’s group. I definitely see what she’s saying. 😂

During Team Pure’s performance, the girls had difficulty synchronizing their moves, especially Heidi who forgot the steps. Team Posh, who were self-admitted bad dancers, fared much better than the first one. Team Adorable’s choreography was smart; most of their dance was done solo, smartly avoiding any possible synchronization problems.

Last place: Team Pure: Clara, Jennica, Heidi, Alicia

2nd place: Team Posh: Valerie, Veronika, Tu, Cindy

Challenge Winner: Team Adorable: Maureen, Dorothy, Shikin, Nametha, Layla

Tension is brewing between Jennica and Maureen. Jennica thinks it unfair that Maureen got a higher score than her.

Photo shoot: Colgate Optic White Signature Smile

The girls get to show 4 frames to panel, so variety is key here. Joel Lim returns to shoot. The best performer this week gets to be the face of Colgate Optic White.

Maureen is up first, and since this is a beauty shoot, this seems like it would be a breeze for her. And it is! Her beautiful smile really helps sell the shot. (BTW, she’s “the girl who is genetically blessed” in the episode title.) Nametha and Alicia seem to have a harder time with this shoot as they are not too used with smiling in front of the camera.

Clara is conscious about her gummy smile, which is oddly much like Gani from Cycle 3 who was also from Indonesia and also super conscious about the same thing. Cara notices how Jennica isn’t too confident during the shoot and wants her to give more variety to her shots. Heidi looked pumped to start taking photos, too much energy. But that energy quickly dissipated when she started overthinking her poses, going overboard. Dorothy looked effortless. Tu, who was super stressed earlier in the episode, didn’t look it at all this time. She’s so smiley and joyful while shooting.

Deliberation

This week’s judging panel is Cindy, Cara, and Thai model and actress Lukkade. Plus, there’s an empty seat… and there goes Yu Tsai with his dramatic entrance. “Models, models, models” “Yu Tsai, Yu Tsai, Yu Tsai” I also love how the walls on the deliberation room changes color to match the girls’ outfits for this week. They’re in all-red dresses this time.

Alicia was super nervous going into panel, but her shots turned out better than even she expected. The judges note that Maureen was made for this kind of shoot, and that Colgate would kill to have her as their image model. Cara didn’t like the lack of variety in the 4 frames, but the other judges disagreed. Yu Tsai loves how Tu’s photos show a story, a clear beginning, middle and end. The judges all loved Dorothy’s photo. Even Cara wants to get up and brush her teeth at that moment. That’s great business for Colgate! 😂 The judges say that Jennica’s photos were too pageant-y (Lukkade even called it cheesy), and Cindy wants her to bring more than just okay photos. In the continuing battle between the twins, it’s Veronika’s photos that the judges liked better.
