The Miss Earth Organization has crowned the new Miss Earth 2017! The Philippines wins its 3rd Miss Earth crown in just 4 years, for a total of 4 Miss Earth victories since the pageant started. That’s quite the extraordinary feat in the beauty pageant world. It seems like it all came down to the round dreaded by the candidates, but much-loved by pageant fans worldwide: the final Q&A.

The Final Question

Who or what do you think is the biggest enemy of Mother Earth and why?

I don’t think it’s as tough as the final question for Miss Earth 2016, which tackled a specific environmental issue. This year’s final question is more… general. But I do think we got interesting answers from the final four: AustraliaColombia, Philippines, and Russia. Here’s how they answered, starting with Miss Colombia:

The Answers

Colombia 🇨🇴

Addressing the crowd in English, Miss Colombia Juliana Franco wants us to rethink our ways:

I truly believe that today the bigger enemy that our earth has is the consumption. We all have to rethink about the consumption because so many industries are really polluting all our Mother Earth. So we have to rethink about what we buy, what we eat, so we can help the Mother Earth. Thank you.

Australia 🇦🇺

Half-Filipina Miss Australia Nina Robertson pinpoints a select group of people as Mother Earth’s enemies:

I think the biggest enemies of the Mother Earth are the people that do not believe that climate change is real. Because for them they do not see the long-term effects that this climate change and global warming would have. I would like to keep educating more people and raising more awareness because sometimes they’re just not aware of it. So as an eco-warrior and all the girls here on stage, this is what we’re here to do. So thank you.

As host James Deakin quipped, “Shots fired.” 😂

Philippines 🇵🇭

Miss Philippines Karen Ibasco thinks the problem is just in front of us:

I believe the real problem in this world is not climate change. The real problem is us because of our ignorance and apathy. What we have to do is to start changing our ways, to start recalibrating our minds and redirecting our steps. Because together as a global community our micro-efforts will have a macro-effect to help save our home, our planet, our earth. Thank you.

Russia 🇷🇺

I don’t know who was more nervous: Miss Russia Lada Akimova or her interpreter. 😂

Thank you for your question and good evening everyone.

Our Mother Earth has a lot of enemies indeed, although, I must say, she also has a lot of friends. But I think the most serious enemies of our Mother Earth are us.

We must rethink our conduct and unite to help our planet. Only together can we do this.

Miss Russia buckled under pressure and got the dreaded bell to signal that time’s up.

The Amiciness Answer 🏆

Of course, I’ll take a crack at answering the question, no? 😂

The biggest enemy of Mother Earth is greed. Our planet has already gifted us the resources we need but we don’t know when enough is enough. We always want more. We consume and we take, but we never give back. As if we’re the last generation to live on Earth. Sadly, if we don’t change our ways now, we may just be one of the last. It’s high time we get rid of this greed and offer Mother Earth the love and generosity she herself has given us. Before it’s too late. Thank you.
