Thoughts While Watching “Ghost Fighter” as An Adult

When I was a child, I thought Ghost Fighter was a horror anime and was very hesitant to watch it. Because, ghosts. It was one of the first アニメ we 90s kids have ever loved along with Dragon Ball Z, Flame of Recca and others. Good thing, Netflix brought it back. So here are just some of my random thoughts while watching. Things we could have missed out when we were pure innocent children. Enjoy.

Pilot Episode

• Opening scene was brutal and very teleserye. Namatay agad si Eugene.
• In the beginning of the episode, the driver was denying that it was his fault but we would soon find out that he was a reckless driver.
• Whoever thought of the Westernized names of the Filipino version was an absolute genius. Eugene for Yusuke and Alfred for Kuwabara.
• Eugene was just 14 years old.
• Eugene was a troubled kid and in the pilot, he was being called to go to the guidance office and not the principal’s office. #Rehabilitation Annalise is proud.
• Eugene’s mother could be suffering from depression, and she was watching some weirdly drawn TV show.
• The anime was based on a manga and was inspired by the environment of Japan then. Ang galing lang how Japan maintained everything good about the country like its cleanliness, the school uniforms. Basta.
• Why is Eugene wearing a green uniform when all his classmates and schoolmates are in blue?
• Eugene’s funeral photo is red carpet ready. #hot
• It’s a good thing that Eugene wasn’t cremated or else…
• Bakit lagi nakatago ang kaliwang kamay ni Charlene?
• Ang ikli lang pala ng bawat episode. Thanks GMA for the many commercials.

Episode 2

• A narrator explains what happened in the previous episode. And may pa title pa!
• The opening title sequence is the same location as the “other world” Charlene brings Eugene to. I’m using the Filipinized names. Just so. Bakit ba?!
• Jericho’s name is Yama-sama. Told you, whoever thought of Jericho, G-E-N-I-U-S. And Jericho fit the “Jr” written on his hat thingy.
• OMG, p’wede pala ma-cremate si Eugene.
• Oh, Jenny (Keiko-chan) is crying in her sleep. tama ba? Jenny? Haha.
• Jenny is so baby-faced in season 1.
• Charlene finally shows her left hand.
• Alfred has sixth sense and is possessed by Eugene.
• Aww nakakaiyak naman how they show the grief felt (because of Eugene’s death) by Jenny’s parents.
• Jenny has two unnamed bffs (that she abandons later in the season).
• OMG. Eugene in Alfred’s body squeezed Jenny’s boobs from behind. Sobrang di ko maalala to! And apparently inside joke nila ‘tong mag-jowa.
• I just realized that Eugene doesn’t have a father and it’s never mentioned why. Ang galing.
• Eugene in his funeral outfit.
• And there’s this gold egg that will determine Eugene’s reincarnation. No Spoilers.

Episode 3

• So the bullies are asking Jenny 5,000 Yen. That’s Php2,500 from a high school student!
• Alfred saves Jenny in his royal blue uniform standing out from a sea of navy blue uniforms. Baka nasobrahan lang sa laba uniform niya dahil sa pakikipag-away. Wala pang Ariel dati.
• Why are evil teachers always bucktoothed? Sensei’s cheekbones are to die for.
• OMG the evil teachers are smoking but in an indoor smoking area. Japan, there’s a place for everything. They want Alfred expelled.
• Alfred takes a beating without fighting back. Ma-eexpel kasi siya and his friends. Character development in 3 episodes!
• Evil bucktoothed sensei changes his strategy. They need to get 50 points in the science test.
• OMG Alfred is using a pair of pencils as chopsticks. Unacceptable in the new normal!
• Another group of delinquents wants to pick a fight with Alfred. Kamukha pa niya ‘yung isa.
• Alfred falls asleep and Eugene helps him review in a dream. Aww.
• Eugene possesses a school girl and fights a group of delinquents that is after Alfred. Ang dami namang basagulero!
• Ay naku, binura ang sagot ni Alfred kaya naging 48 lang score n’ya. Ginawa din sa akin to dati ng seatmate ko nung grade 2!
• Alfred looks up and thanks Eugene. *cries*

Episode 4

• Eugene says “Che!” Haha. Researching, it’s a Japanese informal word meaning Shoot, Dang and the like. Tita Che says hi.
• Jericho sends an investigator in the form of a little girl.
• OMG Eugene denies na jowa n’ya si Jenny. #friendzoned.
• The investigator follows Jenny for the day.
• We now now that Jenny is good in speaking English and she plays volleyball.
• Jenny has a suitor with some Kpop feels bangs (Jenny’s bangs are horrendous) na binasted niya.
• Eugene is in a comatose state lying on his bed. So tinanggal pala nila siya sa kabaong.
• I prefer Eugene’s bangs down vs. brushed -up look.
• OMG. Jenny you can’t kiss an unconscious person. #consent
• Who’s the mysterious person who burned down Eugene’s house?!
• Jenny enters the burning house following safety precautions. Buti na lang tinuturo sa Japan ang emergency stuff.
• She covers Eugene in a blanket. ‘Yung totoo, bumbero ba si Jenny?
• Eugene throws the egg to save Jenny so wala din pala nagawa si Alfred.
• Aww I missed this sad background music. Awesome musical scoring.
• Ahh kaya pala nagpalit ng hairstyle si Jenny. Nasunog. HAHA. Ang galing.
• And the bad guy who committed arson has not been caught. Closure pls.

Episode 5

• For Eugene to resurrect, kailangan niya ma mouth-to-mouth ng isang buhay na tao.
• The three closest living persons to Eugene are: his mom, Jenny and Alfred.
• ANG FUNNY. Alfred dreams of kissing Eugene’s unconscious body. I don’t remember this at all. Baka na censor ng MTRCB. HAHA
• What. Alfred, Eugene and Jenny go to the same school? Akala ko iba school niya.
• Eugene’s mom are hanging out with transexuals. So progressive!
• OMG Jenny has to kiss Eugene for midnight pero medyo nalate siya kasi naghubad pa siya ng sapatos.
• Dumilat lang pala basta si Eugene. Akala ko may ilaw-ilaw magic effect pa.
• Eugene’s casual outfit is so nice.
• Park Seo Joon can be a good actor for Eugene but he is too tall. P’wede rin siyang Alfred.
• Alfred loves cats. A cat is hostaged by the bullies from other schools.
• Eugene reveals that he has come back to life.
• And no one gave a fuzz that he was once dead inside a coffine. Okay.
• The head bully is possessed by a monster.
• Right, Eugene was a spirit detective.

Episode 6

• Eugene’s mother woke him up in his sleep just because she was worried that Eugene would be dead. How sweet.
• So Eugene comes back to school after his resurrection. #awkward. Now, everybody is really afraid of Eugene except Alfred and the teacher.
• OMG another evil sensei.
• Japanese PE uniform is composed of a sweater and jogging pants.
• Spirit Detective Item #1 is Reito Lens.
• Eugene is accused of stealing stuff which is a trap set by his evil sensei.
• Grabe sinuntok pa siya.
• What kind of fountain pen is that. Ang taba! tapos may dragon pa. Pano mo hahawakan un.
• Ayan na ang rei gun!
• OMG ni-rei gun n’ya si Iwa Moto. HAHAHA.
• Kurama aka Dennis, Hiei aka Vincent and Goki are the kontra bidas for this episode.
• Chaka ni Vincent and Dennis.
• Ngayong long hair na ako gets ko na bat ganun buhok ni Dennis na madaming fly-away.

Episode 7

• Onga pala. May singsing nga pala si Eugene.
• Okay, nasira na ung damit ni Goki. Pero kinabukasan ganun pa rin suot niya.
• So 15 years old lang si Dennis? And di din siya babae. Sa tagalized version kasi babae siya nung una. Harhar.
• Sino yung hunter na naka-sugat kay Dennis the Wolf??
• So nagpanggap si Dennis na bata for fifteen years. #awkward
• OMG. Eugene also offers his life to the mirror kasi naalala niya nanay niya kung gaano kalungkot nanay niya nung namatay siya.
• Dennis’ human name is Shuichi.

Episode 8

• Wala bang ibang spirit detective? Si Eugene lang?
• Lapad ng noo ni Vincent.
• And hindi ba weird ung outfit niya para di mapansin ni Jenny?
• Daming exposure ng mabait na sensei
• May power pala si Charlene.
• Sobrang daldal ni Vincent nung masama pa siya.
• Dennis can be played by Lee Minho.

Episode 9

• Genkai is Master Jeremiah.
• Who is Rando!?
• OMG Alfred is also there to try out. Oops, he is just there to consult about his sixth sense.
• Master Jeremiah walks like she is floating.
• Katawa ang toinks moment sa anime. Yung lahat bumabaligtad.
• OMG di pala totoong lotto yun. Nagiging red pag may power ang humawak.
• Master Jeremiah looks like Picolo.
• Bakit naka uniform pa rin si Alfred.
• Eugene’s hairstyle is called regent hairstyle.
• OMG Alfred is first to cross the dark forest.
• Na-late pala si Eugene pero pinagbigyan siya.
• If I remember correctly, Rando is the child. It’s always the child.

Episode 10

• Don’t you just love the opening song? 90s rock.
• Omg lalabas na ang espada ni Alfred. Ano tawag sa Tagalized version ng reiki sword? Can’t remember.
• Sometimes this show is good in drawing shadows. Sometimes, it’s not. This episode, may may magandang animation ung sa buddha.
• OMG nagyoyosi si Jeremiah.
• Nagpapakilala yung ibang kasali sa contest pero ayaw ko na i-lista di naman sila sasali sa Ghost Fighter team.
• Number 1 delinquent talaga ang credentials nila Alfred and Eugene. HAHA.
• OMG may spirit power din pala ung ninja.
• Hala lumabas pala si Eugene to talk to Charlene. Pwede pala un?
• Ang galing magbalance ni Charlene sa kanyang flying stick. Ano yan may continuity problem. Nawala ung flying stick.
• So pumasok din si Charlene sa temple kahit di naman sya kasali. HAHA ano ba yan.
• OMG demon slayer ang kalaban ni Alfred.
• So kung di pala swordsman ang nakalaban ni Alfred, baka di sword ang power niya.
• So 13 years old lang sila dito pero mga kalaban nila sobrang tatanda na. Haha
• Weakness ni Eugene ang Spiritual Responsiveness.
• May ganun talagang move? Biceps lang ang ginagamit? hahaha

Episode 11

• Wah di ako makanuod ang dami tumatawag.
• Parang di pa nagpapakita ang assistant na halimaw ni Jericho.
• Naku Charlene, ni-reveal mo talaga ang weakness ni Eugene na once a day lang siya makaka rei-gun. #dakdakera
• Ano ang surname ni Eugene sa tagalized version?
• Omg nilagay niya ung yosi ni Jeremiah sa kalaban niya.
• Bat nagbago ang stats ni Eugene?
• Ayan pinakita na ung assistant na monster.
• OMG ninja stars aka Shuriken.
• So Euegene won out of sheer luck.
• Ingay-ingay bumulong ni Charlene.
• OMG Alfred vs Rando next episode. Ayun pinakita na ung tunay niyang anyo. Naalala ko na. HAHA

Episode 12

• Na-spoil na sa title na matatalo si Kuwabara. You didn’t give him a chance!
• Cool fire balls!
• Aww gusto ko din makapunta sa batting center.
• The sound of Alfred’s bones cracking is ughhhh.
• OMG Alfred’s arm. Ughhh.
• Violent pala tong anime na to.
• Eugene is on FIRE.
• OMG Rando’s voice. HAHA Ang liit. Di nagbago.

Episode 13

• Eugene’s first major villain. OMG.
• Charlene, gamutin mo kaya si Alfred.
• Can’t get pass the tiny voice of Rando.
• Naka Chuck Taylor’s si Eugene.
• OMG di talaga bagay boses ni Rando. HAHA
• Maybe Rando is called Rando kasi ang random ng powers niya.
• Alfred is really instrumental to Eugene’s power and strength.
• Parang tiyanak talaga boses ni Rando.
• Naka chamba na naman si Eugene.
• Eugene becomes Jeremiah’s successor! Yatta!

Episode 14

• Jenny, don’t be too desperate naman. Char.
• Alfred: “Just listening to you makes my butthole tingle.” Whatdafudge.
• Ooh. May shotgun na reigun pala si Eugene. Can’t remember him using that in the tourney.
• Poor Jenny left alone in the cinemas.
• Charlene’s human outfits = Wow!
• Sino nga ba ang Four Holy Beasts, si Lazarus lang naalala ko.
• Ang complicated pala ng plot nito. Di na ako makasunod. Jk.
• Alfred volunteered to be part of the team pala.
• So the portal is just in an abandoned basement. How convenient.
• The first cellphones were in compact disks.
• Buti naman naalala niyo si Jenny.
• OMG ayan na si Dennis and Vincent.
• Lazarus is Suzaku. What.
• Hala bumagsak na ang kisame.

Episode 15

• Bakit ang rei minsan red, minsan blue.
• Ang boring ng episode.
• Pero dito magpapakitang gilas si Dennis.
• Ang style lagi ni Dennis magpapamukha muna siyang talo at sugatan.
• Ayan na ang latigong rosas. May scent palang kasama un.
• And english speaking pala si Dennis.
• OMG ung ulo niya napunta sa balls niya.
• Ang weak talaga ni Dennis. Dali masugatan.

Episode 16

• Medyo homoerotic pala ang pag haba at pag liit ng espada ni Alfred. Oops.
• OMG video call capable pala ng compact cellphone ni Charlene.
• Di ko maalala if si Alfred ang lalaban or si Vincent.
• Ah si Alfred pala.
• WhatDaFadge, naging monsters ang hair strands ng villain.
• Rei-ken pala tawag sa espada. Someone comment ano tawag dun sa tagalized version. Huhu
• The second half of the episode is always for the sad part, kasama ng sad music. 🙁
• OMG very human centipede.
• I’ve always loved the last scene of every episode. Yung parang cliffhanger art.

Episode 17

• Hundred spankings as punishment? Jericho you are a tyrant!
• Odd. They used Alfred as a reiki detector. Diba dapat mas sensitive sila Dennis and Vincent?
• Hala buhay pa ung pusa. Ano ba yan. I’m so over this villain. Twice na siya nabuhay.
• Nashowcase tuloy ung power ng next villain, which is ice.
• Okay, di ko naintindihan sinabi ni Dennis.
• Ang corny ng laban ni Vincent. Espada lang.
• Naku gagamitin na naman si Jenny as bait. How weak, Lazarus.
• Binilin ni Eugene si Jenny kay Charlene, pero di pa niya napuntahan si Jenny since then. Tsk!

Episode 18

• OMG ang scary ng monster sensei.
• May malaking monitor pa talaga si Lazarus. Very big boss ang build up sa kanya pero in the end matatalo din naman siya.
• Ang kagandahan sa Ghost Fighter, may hangganan din ang mga spiritual energy nila (at least in this arc).
• Minsan out of place ang sad background music. HAHA
• Ok lang na 13 years old lang si Eugene kasi sobrang energetic niya.
• Bat naka mute ang monitor ni Lazarus.
• Di nagmamatch ung fingering ni Lazarus sa sound ng flute.
• OMG classic ung pag salo ni Lazarus ng mga suntok ni Eugene.
• Lumilipad pala si Lazarus.
• Patay na deflect ang rei-gun.
• Ang taas ng takong ng shoes nie Eugene.
• Naalala ko ung tagalized voice ni Lazarus. Hahaha.
• Jenny is fighting zombies by bitch-slapping them.
• The problem with Eugene’s villains is that they keeping using Jenny. This becomes his motivation to win even more.

Episode 19

• Arte arte naman kasi ni Lazarus. One-hand pag-ilag.
• Lazarus’ red bangs are the bomb. Next to Card Captor Sakura’s.
• Sobrang random ng powers ng mga to. Walang common theme. Kidlat tapos ngayon nag ka clones siya?
• Nung bata ako fave villain ko si Lazarus. Now I’m so bored. HAHA.
• Hay naku if they just followed Alfred’s lead.
• Concentration!
• Ang random din ng flashbacks ni Eugene.
• Ugh di pa din tapos. I am so bored.

Episode 20

• Ugh. Di pa rin tapos.
• Tumatakbo pa rin sila Dennis, Vincent at Alfred paakyat ng tore.
• Naglalaban pa rin si Eugene and Lazarus. Hang tagal.
• Ang daming pakulong powers ni Lazarus. Jirits.
• Antenna pala ang bangs niya. So isa pala siyang malaking insekto?
• Ang dami ring pakulong power ni Eugene.
• Three days tulog si Eugene. Bakit laging ganun buhok niya pag bumabangon.
• OMG akting na akting si Alfred and Dennis.
• Teka kayo ba Jenny? At nagdedemand ka diyan ng explanation.

Episode 22

• Bago na bahay nila Eugene. Apartment Building na kasi nasunog ung dati diba. haha
• File case lang ang bag ni Eugene. huhu.
• So inabutan siya ng VHS. No wonder di to kaya panuorin ng younger kids.
• OMG bat ganyan damit mo Dennis. Para kang alalay ni Princess Sarah.
• Ganda talaga ng outfits ni Charlene.
• Katawa may intro pa ung VHS.
• Magkamukha nanay ni Eugene at ate ni Alfred.
• OMG ano ang tagalized name ni Yukina?
• OMG first appearance ng Taguro brothers. Buti walang tagalized name ang Taguro brothers noh?
• “Start rehearsing so you can cry anytime.” Taguro to Yukina. Artista lang. haha
• Yukino is Vincent’s sister!
• Alfred and Eugene killed the monster in one shot.
• Ayun lang ang nangyari sa episode. HAHA.

Episode 23

• OMG may naskip akong episode. Anyway.
• Rich people like to collect wild animals noh?
• Taguro is the first to quantify his power.
• Taguro can only manipulate his muscles so wala pala siyang ibang power.
• The villain asks if Eugene and Alfred are really humans? OMG signs.
• Ang boring.
• Di pala natural ung mata sa noo ni Vincent.
• The name of the club is Black Black Club? hahaha
• They are in a zoom call.
• Isa doon ung future boss ni Taguro.
• Ang boring ng episode na ito. SKIP.

Episode 24

• HAHA. Lalabanan daw ni Eugene kahit matanda or babies.
• Ano ginawa ni Eugene sa dibdib ng kalaban?
• Hinipuan pala niya. Kalurks.
• Bat niya sa boobs sinusuntok haha.
• Ano ba Eugene you’ll get cancelled. Transwomen are women.
• Tsk. Tsk.
• Nagbet din sa side nila Jericho. So parang same lang sila nung mga evil bosses. Pero strawberry bread lang ang prize.
• Child Vincent and child Yukina have the same outfits as their adult counterparts.
• Ang weak naman ng mga demons na to.
• 72 trillion, 350 billion. Wah.
• Kaya pala na bankrupt tong big boss. Engots.
• Alfred has telephathy!

Episode 25

• This is it. Eugene and Alfred vs. Taguro Brothers.
• Pwede nga pala mag transform si Taguro liit.
• Kasi naman di na lang pinadala ung buong team. Mismanagement by Jericho.
• May lover pala si Yukina.
• Ang ganda ng animation ng sword ni Alfred.
• When someone from the Demon World kills a human, they become a criminal? Eh ang dami na ngang pinatay na guards ni Vincent.
• Lahat ng anime ata may babaeng healer.

Episode 26

• So bayaran pala si Taguro na umarteng namatay. Tsk.
• Naka ilang sirang uniform na kaya si Eugene?
• Marunong mag motor si Taguro haha.
• Bat ang mga pants dati maluwag tapos may belt lang?
• OMG sinira ni Taguro ang parking lot bldg.
• So si Taguro pala ang dahilan bat sila sumali sa tournament ng mga halimaw.
• Two months pala training nila.
• Di ba nila gets na si Jeremiah un? haha

S2 Episode 1

• Is the dark tournament a commentary to Boxing and Wrestling? JK.
• Medyo corny pala na si Jeremiah ung fifth member.
• May prelims pala sa barko.
• So Yokai is the word for halimaw. From Wikipedia, Yōkai are a class of supernatural monsters, spirits, and demons in Japanese folklore. In Tagalog, engkanto.
• So nakatulog na si Eugene.
• And si Jeremiah ay nagpakawala ng matinding shotgun, pero i think buhay pa ung mga halimaw.
• Bat ba sila ang sinusugod ng mga halimaw?
• Even the subs for the captain of the ship is “pirated”. Example: Had is ‘ad. HAHA.
• Buti pa mga contestants sa tournament naka hotel.
• Ayan na si yoyo boy.

S2 Episode 2

• Sila Eugene agad ang lalaban?
• Mas maganda boses ng referee sa Tagalized haha.
• Nahiya pala si Jericho kasi lagi sya tinutukso. Kaya siya lumaki haha.
• Koponan ni Eugene> Urameshi Team
• Zeru pala pangalan nung isangkalaban.
• At naninindak siya, sinunog nya ung audience HAHA.
• Nasa Upper B lang seats nila Charlene, Jenny and Ate ni Alfred. I think Suzie name nya.
• Ayan na ang music. Ibig sabihin babangon si Alfred.
