2. The House of Flowers

The House of Flowers – In this dark comedy, a wealthy matriarch tries to maintain her family’s facade of perfection after her husband’s mistress exposes their dirty secrets. (via The Cinemaholic)

The House of Flowers (a.k.a. La Casa de las Flores) is a Mexican drama/comedy by creator-director Manolo Caro. It tells the story of a wealthy matriarch florist’s family whose seemingly perfect facade is shattered when the patriarch is found out to have been involved in a secret affair. Worse, the mistress commits suicide right in their own home. ¡Es muy escandaloso!

It has the trappings of a traditional telenovela—secret affairs, family business woes, paternity tests—with a decidedly more modern (millennial?) take. Unlike in Insatiable, you can pretty much root for everyone on The House of Flowers. Especially, Paulina (Cecilia Suárez). She’s really the best, even though the way she speaks can be grating sometimes.

The show reminds me a lot of Desparate Housewives, with the story being put into motion by a similar tragic beginning. Even the opening titles look similar in style.

Should you watch it? Yes. Absolutamente.

Season 1 (13 Episodes) of The House of Flowers is on Netflix.
