Asia’s Next Top Model Cycle 5 Episode 11 Review + Amiciness Critique

We are a few weeks away from the finale of Asia’s premiere modelling competition. But before we get to crown Asia’s Next Top Model let’s first talk about Asia’s Next Top Model Cycle 5 Episode 11. Read on for my Asia’s Next Top Model Cycle 5 Episode 11 review and how the girls fared in their shoot this week.

The photoshoot theme is “Tropical Ice Queen”… or something to that effect. I’m not really sure. Malaysian fashion photographer Bibo Aswan was behind the lens for the shoot, with Yu Tsai directing. So who among the girls broke the ice and who got stuck in avalanche? These are my thoughts on the photoshoot this week…

The Photoshoot

I don’t quite get this theme. They did a similar ice-based theme in Cycle 2 (which coincidentally was also shot in Malaysia) and, minus the whole tropical thing, it’s pretty similar to this photoshoot. Ice? Check. Skimpy outfits? Check.

This shoot though had the added difficulty of the girls being in skates. I understand that it is there to test the models under pressure, but the skates kind of ruin the look for me. They’re not even the fashionable kind of skates. No ice queen will be caught dead in those bland black rented skates. The styling is a hot mess.

And what is with this tropical and ice blend? (Hey that sounds like a Starbucks drink! 😂) Neither of those two are distinctly represented enough in the photo to make them work harmoniously. The fog looks less wintery and more swampy. The background looks flat (because it is!) and cheap.

To sum it all up: it’s an interesting idea executed badly. And it shows in the photos we got this week.

Scores

Cindy ★

For the nth time, Cindy still looks uncomfortable in her photo. The way she bends her body looks uncomfortable too. Yeah… that’s the overwhelming feeling I get from this photo. BTW does anyone else find it strangely funny how the flower is just in front of her… um… crotch? Doesn’t it look a bit weird? 😂

Clara ★★★½

I love that there’s movement in this photo: the breeze blowing her robe, the earrings dangling away. It also looks like she’s casting her ice magic all around, which plays up to the “ice queen” (not ice cream!) story. But what is up with her left hand holding on to the flower crutch? Did the ice queen get an injury while playing hockey? 😂

Maureen ★★★★

Now this actually looks like a hard pose to pull off: both of her skates are not flat on the floor. Pretty daring I must say. It would’ve been perfect had her left leg been extended all the way through. Another thing is the awkward placement of her left hand. It makes her look like the photo was taken while she was dancing to Rihanna’s “Where Have You Been”. She also looks like one of the twins in this emoji: 👯

Shikin ★★★

Shikin was the only one adventurous enough to pick the pineapple as her prop. Even with the awkward handling of the pineapple, the top half is gorgeous. The rest of the photo, though, is lackluster. It’s like her energy stopped at the waist. It also doesn’t help that her one-piece swimsuit with that robe doesn’t give her any kind of shape.

Tu ★½

Tu says she “can’t control her sexy” but this photo is anything but that. Everything looks tense, and not in a good way. She looks so unsure with herself. Her eyes look dead. She got the best wardrobe, with that touch of pink making her pop against the background. But alas, that didn’t help her here.

Xiao Qing Queen ★★★★

I don’t understand what the judges were on about. This is a good photo. She looks really regal. It has that “bow down b*tches” attitude. The only flaw is her super stiff left leg. However, it kinda looked like she had a hard time staying in place that she just locked her left leg straight to not fall over.

Episode 11 Review

Xiao Queen really did change up the tone of the show that I wish she had arrived sooner.

Runway Challenge

YES! We finally got another runway challenge! And they did it on a very long hanging bridge. It’s the show’s longest catwalk to date. (The editors probably had a hard time stabilizing the shots on the shaky bridge, so kudos to y’all! 👏)

It was no contest: Xiao Queen slayed that challenge. The moment she started walking, you could really see how superior her modelling skills are to some of the other girls in the Top 5. Her years of experience really showed.

Xiao Qing Who? It’s Xiao Queen, B*tch

This episode was all about Xiao Queen. She SLAYED this whole episode. I hadn’t noticed before how much she towers over all the other girls. Girl’s got the height! She’s putting those long legs to good use. It would be such a treat if Xiao Queen gets first call-out in Episode 12.

Oh, and in other news, Xiao Queen will actually design the girls’ dresses for the finale show. How cool is that! Multi-talented fashion queen! 💥

Malaysia Truly Asia

Everytime this show gets to Malaysia, it always ends up looking like it’s part of the country’s tourism campaign.

We get multiple shots of Sunway City, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia where the girls are sleeping, eating, shooting their photo shoots, pretty much everything. The episode shows the girls marvel at their new, swanky model house at Sunway Resort. The girls do their photoshoot on the ice skating rink at the Sunway Pyramid mall. Plus the show even dedicated a full segment to Sunway Medical Centre so we can all witness their state-of-the-art high-tech medical equipment in action. How convenient that Tu needed to go the hospital, right? 😉

BTW, I don’t know if they brought their whole deliberation set to Malaysia, or if they took a day trip back to the Singapore studio just to shoot the deliberation. Does anyone know the answer? 🤔

Xiao Qing was so unnecessary. It was awkward and weird. She didn’t even contribute much on the judging panel.
