Amiciness is recapping Episode 4 of America’s Next Top Model. The models are having their makeovers, or as they call it this season, their Ty-overs. When will Ms. Tyra Banks stop placing her brand on common English words? We don’t know for sure, but we sure Ty-love it.
Last time on America’s Next Top Model, we met the final 14 models for Cycle 22. And for their first photo shoot as the final 14, they were bound in pairs. Devin proved his haters wrong and won Best Photo, while Delanie‘s lack of fierceness placed her at the bottom, and she was the first model eliminated. Who will still be in the running towards becoming America’s Next Top Model?
I’m here to prove a lot of people wrong. — Devin
Because Devin got the FCO last episode, he gets to stay in the Tyra Suite. As an additional perk, he’ll be getting a personal tip from no less than Ms. Banks herself. Her #TyTyTip for Devin: no to profile and face down, not his best angle.
Bello is annoyed that Devin won. He believes that Devin is an over-the-top person, and therefore an over-the-top model. Cliques are forming in the house. The self-named clique DMA is composed of Devin, Mikey, and Ashley. They’re BFFs, so much in fact that all three hang out in the bathtub together. Ashley and Mikey are now making out. And they even do it during their time together at confessional.
Tyra Mail! A HERO never gives up. They’ll be wearing superhero costumes? (Short answer: no.) Hadassah predicts that they’ll be doing some acting. Hadassah’s confessional to remind us that she’s a pageant girl.
I can’t be nice to everybody, unless there is a benefit to me.
Hadassah is comfortable acting, as she was Sandy in a production of Grease. Devin chimes in that he was a scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz. How fitting. Hadassah seems to think so too. She and Bello play a joke on him, with Hadassah dressed as Dorothy, and Bello as the scarecrow. Devin is visibly unhappy.
You’re fake just like your boobs. — Devin to Hadassah
I would never say anything like that, even if it’s true. — Hadassah’s reply
Devin finally says in confessional that Hadassah is “not a moDEL.”
Ooh, new opening titles. What is this weird cult meeting thing they’re doing? With their banging their heads on the table? WTF? Daym Nyle! Werq, Mamé! Aside from Tyra’s crazy scenes, this is probably the best out of the three Guys vs Girls cycles.
The fight continues. Why. You don’t know me, so don’t judge me… or something like that gets thrown around. We get a bit more insight into why Hadassah is “Ms. Black Barbie.” At the young age of 8 years old, her father was gone from her life. That’s why she had a nanny, because nobody’s at home. Bello is looking forward to seeing what happens with the model house conflicts. Stefano says in confessional:
It will be the last time I am in the bottom 2, because I’m the best model in this competition.
Photo Shoot: American Heroes
Yu Tsai meets the models in some kind of military field, or a studio set that looks like that. He introduces two U.S. war veterans, the American heroes. They are Purple Heart recipients for their service in Afghanistan and Iraq. Melissa Stockwell lost her left leg when their vehicle hit a bomb at the side of the road. Alex Minsky has in a similar situation, and he lost his right leg. Ashley was very touched by Alex’s story. Nyle understands how these soldiers’ being disadvantaged is similar to how he feels being deaf. Melissa now competes as a paralympian. Alex Minsky is successfully working in the modelling industry. The models will be posing with these heroes in their photo.
Nyle talked one-on-one with Alex. He does feel lonely and invisible in this group of models as he’s the only one who speaks American Sign Language (ASL). Yu Tsai introduces a special guest. To style the models is fashion editor and Tyra’s co-host in Fab Life, Joe Zee. He expects strength, poise, and extreme couture poses in their high-fashion editorial photos. The photographer is still Erik Asla from the past two weeks.
Devin is still doing the crazy poses. He’s posing with Alex. Yu Tsai is yelling at him, but he’s not following. Bello is paired with Melissa, and Melissa asks him about his eye color. Dustin is unfocused, and he’s laughing during the shoot. Yu Tsai thinks he’s not taking it seriously. Melissa liked working with Justin. Mamé suggested that she stand on top of the crates. The mentors love it. Yu Tsai learned to sign “ready” for Nyle. Nyle gets to really focus on improving his modelling, not being involved with any of the model house conflicts. Ava is intimidated by her height issue. Stefano is very confident going into the shoot. “I’m extremely good-looking and I know that.”
The models get back to the model house, and we get a peek into the OPPO phone room. Stefano misses his family and friends. He breaks down talking to his mom. “I’m gonna win this mom, I know I am.” Ashley is talking to her mom. She’s her motivation, and nobody in this house can stop her from reaching the top. BTW, the models are wearing beanies in their confessional to hide their post-makeover hair. The production finally smartened up. Good job!
“I wonder when the makeovers will be?” says Nyle. Justin: “What if they make you buzz half your head?” Foreshadowing! Hadassah is willing to go home if she doesn’t agree with her makeover. Definitely foreshadowing.
Makeovers! Ty-overs!
The models arrive at Cristophe Salon where they will be getting their Ty-overs. Ms. J and Yu Tsai announce each models’ Ty-overs. Some of them don’t change their look at all. Nyle is only getting a bit of a shave and trim. It’s because he’s already hot the way he looks now. They’re giving Courtney a teeth whitening procedure. Ashley’s saying bye to her glasses as she’s getting contacts. Stefano is getting a floppy-do. He’s not happy. Who would be TBH? Ms. J teases that Mikey’s getting a “snip snip snip,” cutting away his long hair. He’s just kidding! Mikey’s only getting a trim. And finally, Hadassah. She’s getting one side of her head shaved. This is very two years ago. She immediately cries. She’s a pageant girl and that is not a pageant girl haircut. In confessional, Mamé says that if there’s a pageant girl in this group, that she’s it. Mamé will be joining the Miss USA 2015 right after the competition. “Whatever you do, don’t leave. You can’t leave,” Bello comforts Hadassah. Here are the full list of Ty-overs:
- Devin – shaved near bald
- Dustin – honey-kissed
- Lacey – chic bowl cut
- Nyle – clean-up
- Ava – “model” mullet
- Courtney – grey hair + teeth whitening
- Ashley – Ty-ty chop + contacts
- Bello – long hair extensions
- Mamé – curls “gone wild”
- Justin – faux-hawk fade
- Stefano – floppy-do
- Mikey – trim
- Hadassah – side shave
The models shoot their post-makeover photos. Devin looks a lot more model-ish with his head shaved. Nyle continues to be perfect. I love Lacey’s hair now, very high fashion. Stefano was totally thrown under the bus with his emo hair. Is Courtney’s teeth whitening a Next Top Model first?
Ava has been sabotaged with this mullet. I hope she gets to werk this hair in future shoots. Hadassah is still crying as she walks into the restroom. Ms. J follows her and gives her a pep talk. Yu Tsai reminds her of the veterans who lost a lot more than she’ll lose in this makeover.
The confessional line! It’s when the models line up for their turn at the confessional. Mamé leaves the line to go down to the kitchen, and when she comes back, Stefano is in her spot. More fighting! For a spot in the confessional line! Wow. This might be scripted. Nevertheless, we get this gem from Mamé:
You. Damn. Right. I’m. Gonna. Flick. My. Hair.
Hair flips all around!
Skull Mail! Tomorrow you will meet with the judges, only 12 of you will be moving on. “Closer to a hundred K!” confidently exclaims Mikey.
Deliberation
Ms. J, Kelly Cutrone, and Tyra are deliberating this week’s photo shoot. No challenge score this week, so the models will be judged solely on their photo with the American heroes.
Ashley looks gorgeous, but she has no connection to the other people in the shot. The judges like Justin’s photo but wants more energy from him. The judges talk about Courtney’s teeth-whitening procedure. She doesn’t brush regularly! Kids, remember to always brush your teeth! Just a bit more neck and this would’ve been better. Stefano’s pose doesn’t match with the mood of the overall photo. Hadassah looks really pissed walking towards the judges, and the judges pick up on it. In true pageant girl form, she says that there’s nothing wrong with her. She caves, and admits that she’s a little uncomfortable with her makeover. She has zero presence in her face in the photo.
Dustin needs to work a lot more on his face, and conviction. Mamé is surprised that they chose the photo where she went up on the crates. Kelly, however, isn’t feeling this photo. I don’t agree, I think this is a beautiful photo. Lacey’s left leg looks short. The judges comment on Mikey’s squinting problem. Bello’s pose is weird, but his face is beautiful. Ava looks great in her photo; the judges say that she doesn’t look 5’5″, she looks 5’10”. The pose, the dress, the everything. She’ll probably get Best Photo. Devin is doing the “bird of paradise” hand gesture in his photo. Probably his signature pose. Nyle looks hot and he looks like Alex Minsky’s brother, the judges say, but still needs to work on the face.
Hadassah feels like she’s being interrogated at judging, with the judges giving her very negative comments. Nyle has had enough of the complaining about their hair, when he’s not even complaining about his deafness. Truth!
Call Out Order
- Ava
- Mikey
- Bello
- Devin
- Courtney
- Justin
- Nyle
- Lacey
- Mamé
- Dustin
- Ashley
Ava almost got a perfect 30. I think Bello and Devin are too high up the ranking. And Mamé’s being 9th is an injustice.
Bottom two: Hadassah & Stefano
The judges are confused with Stefano as a brand. He just doesn’t translate well in his photos. Hadassah craves too much control, too perfect. Perfect is boring, Tyra says. Only a tenth point difference!
Eliminated: Stefano
I like me, that’s all that matters.
You do you, Stefano!
Next Time
For their photo shoot, the final photo will be completely unretouched. DMA (Devin, Mikey, and Ashley) are becoming the mean girls of the house. Last cycle’s Romeo is name-dropped as conflicts might finally get physical. All exciting stuff!
