Last time on Asia’s Next Top Model, the girls flashed their flirty and confident Closeup diamond white smiles for a glamour shoot. Monika won an actual campaign for Closeup’s newest product, Diamond Attraction. While Franchesca‘s “catalogue” modeling sent her home. Who among the girls will be this year’s Asia’s. Next. Top. Model. Lights, camera, ready, action. It’s time to shine.

Chesca says goodbye
Chesca says goodbye

After Franchesca’s elimination last week, Monika is feeling alone now that her bestfriend in the model house has been eliminated. Amanda is glad that she’s still in the competition, but sad that it had to be Franchesca to go.

Georgina Mail! “Do you know what works for you?” It’s a styling challenge to test the girls’ sense of style.

Drama brewing between Tahlia and Monika. Tahlia still thinks Monika is a basic model and feeling threatened by her recent winning streak in the challenges.

Challenge: Style

Joey and Fashion Director of Zalora Meghna Mistry, greet the girls and judge their outfits of the day. Meghna shares her tips and tricks on how to dress for castings, and how to ramp up plain outfits. Top model tip: Always wear your highest heels during a casting to showcase your height. The girls jazz up what they’re currently wearing with additional fashion items and stylish accessories.

The key to owning your look is to really spend some time to understand what works best for your body type.

The girls are given a fashion theme, and they need to find Zalora clothes that fit the theme. Monika and Melissa seem to not be confident with the challenge. Fashion face-off! The girls are competing in pairs for each theme.

  • KB vs Amanda – feminine
  • Melissa vs Barbara – urban
  • Tahlia vs Aimee – boho
  • Gani vs Monika – basics

Winner: Tahlia

All the girls get 15 minutes for their upcoming photo shoot. Tahlia gets a huge advantage for winning the challenge: an extra 5 minutes for her photo shoot, that she needs to take from one other girl. She chose Monika; Monika is getting only 10 minutes for the shoot.

Photoshoot: Zalora Catalogue

The girls are shooting a catalogue with 3 different looks (basics, boho, and feminine) using Zalora fashion. Each girl is given only 15 minutes to model 3 different looks for Zalora. The photographer for this shoot is Joel Lim.

Tahlia and Gani seem to be nailing the shoot. Tahlia really used the extra 5 minutes to her advantage. Amanda’s blinking problem resurfaces. Monika’s getting 10 minutes flustered her and put a lot of pressure on her. Aimee is next! Wardrobe malfunction! The zipper that can’t be zipped. Barbara is getting a lot of “you’re too old! be more youthful!” comments.

Georgina drops in for a surprise visit at the model house to check in on the girls. She asked the girls to pick who among them had the most “beauty queen-like” answers. Tahlia and Gani pick on Monika, which the latter took as a negative assault to her character. Barbara shares her frustration at being one of the older models. She’s scared that she won’t stay long in the industry with her age.

Photographer Joel Lim and Zalora fashion director Meg Mistry join Joey and Georgina at judging. Tahlia shot good photos and had different personalities for each of the photos, but had trouble with eye contact in 2 of her photos. Amanda has a youthful, fresh commercial look that’s relatable, but needs more personality. Melissa had great photos but was too editorial for this commercial shoot.

You are editorial. That’s something you should never change. BUT this is still your money maker. You need this to pay your rent!

KB is improving week to week. Gani is “the perfect catalogue model” with the strong, versatile face for different looks. The judges all really liked her photos. Barbara’s look doesn’t seem current. There we go again with the ageism. Aimee’s (un)fitness is brought up, but the final results were great. Her professionalism amidst the wardrobe malfunction is commended. Monika’s photos were just okay.

Call Out Order

  1. Gani
  2. Aimee
  3. Melissa
  4. KB
  5. Tahlia
  6. Amanda

Gani will be the face of a new Zalora campaign. Monika looks satisfied that Tahlia is called late in the call out order.

Bottom 2: Barbara and Monika

Both girls accept their being in the bottom. Barbara feels defeated by the age comments. She feels that it will be okay if she gets eliminated. But then… surprise! Georgina is holding both of their photos.

Eliminated: None

No one is eliminated, but Barbara and Monika are only given 10 frames for their next photo shoot.

Next Week

The models prepare for a fierce and exhilarating shoot for Subaru, where they wear nothing except for body paint!

Were you surprised by the non-elimination? Are you #TeamTahlia or #TeamMonika? Or are you on another girl’s team? Sound off in the comments.

Since we have a non-elimination this week, our poll will also be a bit different. Who do you think should have been eliminated? Poll closes 1 hour before the next episode.

I think that the judges could have been a little more objective. Every stage, every week should be a clean slate. They shouldn’t build up ‘expectations’ for individual models, because this is a contest, and they should base judgments only on what they have in the current stage–you’re not competing against yourself. (Yes, this is how things should work ‘in real life,’ but in a competition like this, it comes off as a tad unfair.) You’re going against other girls. Even if, say, you did worse compared to last time, yours still might be better than someone else’s. It works the other way, too: just because you did better than last time doesn’t mean you can’t be worse than someone else.

That said, I’m really glad no one got eliminated. I think both Monika and Barbara deserved to stay.

I did disagree with some of the judges’ commendations, though; some of the girls’ poses were essentially the same, which I guess is okay in catalogue modeling? But put side-by-side, it gets kinda boring. I’m not an expert on this, so, eh, I’ll let it slide.

[ Also, Gani and Tahlia are really fucking mean. Wouldn’t want to be stuck with those two D: I mean, of course I’d target Monika if I were in Tahlia’s place, but they’re deliberately singling her out, even within the model house. Like, wow. I’d be glad to see them go. Shame, they’re both really good models–and yeah, I agree that Gani did the best this time. Which is why I hope it won’t happen again /evil laugh ]

I agree! I didn’t understand the judging on some of the (more boring) photos.

Regarding your first paragraph however: the Next Top Model franchise usually focuses on growth arcs. The judges are looking for girls that can learn and can improve week to week. So it makes sense to compare their current photo to their past performances. Unfair? Probably. But it is what it is.

I think Aimee should have won!

I’m just a little bit ashamed of supporting the Philippines now, just because of that hashtag. *cringes*
        (just kidding. still cringe-worthy though.)

  3. alvin says:

Am I the only one who thinks Amanda’s photos are good? Specially the one on the left. I think she deserves a higher callout. Aimee and Mellisa did the best imo tho.

  4. yanee says:

    Aimee have the best shot!
Really disappointed with Gani and Thalia.. I still can’t believe they have this kind of attitude…
And yes, I vote for Thalia to be voted out.. Duh… She has extra 5 minutes, but what?! She is still last to be called out before the bottom 2…

  5. amiciness says:

Hey everyone, I know we’re all emotional from the events of this episode. But let’s remain calm and objective with our comments. Let’s refrain from name-calling. Thanks x

  6. ching says:

sometimes its not fair base on cycle 1 up to now #Philippines stand out and more best photos but in the end the winner is the one who not! and sometimes comment are not fit on the situation there best is the worst and the worst photo is the best.. #justsaying but its thru…

    1. Winona says:

Ching, honey, that was a headache to read. That attitude is just petulant. (Ahem. : having or showing the attitude of people who become angry and annoyed when they do not get what they want.)
((It would help to fix your grammar, too, but maybe that’s too much to ask for.))

Care to back up your claims?

I know that winning is a big deal and all, but listen, all of the girls are great models. They’ve all got a fair shot at the prize. This time around, I think that Gani did deserve to win. I’m not conceding that picking on Monika was the right thing to do inside the model house–Tahlia’s picking her to take 5 minutes off was perfectly reasonable–but hey, this is a reality show, and the producers are trying to stir up drama.
Anyways, I think that the best photo was indeed the best; the ‘worst photos’ aren’t necessarily the worst, though comparatively they’re pretty low on the scale.

Besides, it’s not just about standing out. The top model has to be able to improve herself, or otherwise remain consistently good. She has to have versatility. Not that Monika, or anyone else, for that matter, doesn’t meet those standards–but you have to admit that these are definitely not some of Monika’s best shots. She didn’t really stand out this time around.

I get the feeling that you’re biased because of some semblance of “Filipino pride.” Don’t get me wrong, I’m a Filipina too, and I am glad that no one had to be eliminated–but don’t you think that, regardless of winning or losing, they’d all still make it big in the industry? They’re perfectly capable of handling themselves.

  7. After watching this episode, I was able to confirm that an angelic face doesn’t automatically translate to an angelic personality. I commend Barbara’s sincerity, I don’t think any contestant will speak something like what she said. It looks like Monika, Barbara, and Aimee will be on the Top 3, not because they are the more civil contestants, but because they are far better than the rest of the girls.

PS: Kudos, Amiciness for an amazing cover every episode.

      Aww shucks, thanks Allegory! 🙂

I also really felt for Barbara this episode. Those comments about her age were relentless.

  8. josh says:

i just came here to read comments. . . hihihi

    1. amiciness says:

I’ll bring the popcorn. LOL. But seriously let’s all be calm guys. And thanks for reading. 🙂

  9. Ed says:

Guys seriously ? This is a competition , how are you going to win without defeating the strongest competitor? don’t be such a kid

    1. Ed says:

Oh and do you guys know that tahlia is really under rated by the judges? all of her photos are not where they should be especially episode 4 , she’s better than monika, and that episode melissa/kb should be first

  10. Lorrie Mae T. Licayan says:

I’m worried about Amanda. I’m worried if she can still make the judges believe that she should stay. She’s been doing bad lately. But she’s my bet out of all the models though 🙂

  11. koil says:

I hope more drama in model house like cycle 2. It’s so boring if they don’t have a fight. And I think gani should win this show.

    1. amiciness says:

I’ve been wishing for drama as early as the first episode. :)) But the next episode promises more drama.

  12. i love monika and barbara than the other girls..they are worth winning for and deserve on the top list..

  13. […] This week on Asia’s Next Top Model Cycle 3, the girls posed in 3 different styles wearing clothes from online retail store Zalora. Each girl had 15 minutes to shoot, Tahlia had an additional 5, while Monika had 5 less. Who were on trend and out of style this week? Here is my own call out order: […]
