#AsNTM2 Episode 8: “The Girl Who Makes a Splash” Recap

The competition is ON as the top 8 models battle to win the coveted title. Unexpectedly, all of a sudden, the girls form alliances and speak behind each others’ backs. Maybe, since Janice has already been eliminated, her throne as “public enemy” must be turned over to one of the remaining girls. Maybe this is just reality TV editing or maybe not, but surely, we are enjoying the drama.

WARNING: SPOILERS AFTER THE JUMP!

Here are the highlights of the episode:

1. Nicole, Jodilly, Katarina and Tia  Versus Marie, Sheena, Josephine and Natalie- After Janice and Sneha’s elimination, it is revealed that the girls have regrouped and formed new alliances. I actually think that this is just a product of manipulative editing but anyway… Katarina tells Jodilly, Nicole and Tia that she does not see anything outstanding in Sheena’s pictures. While in the other room, Sheena cries over her frustrations for not getting FCO last week. Jodilly tells her allies that Sheena is fake for crying about that.

“I can’t go home if I’m a loser.”

-Sheena

Everyone’s interviews imply that they all want the title (of course). As much as they love being friends, they are secretly wishing that the other girls will be eliminated and not them. Understandable. After all, this is a competition.

This makes me miss our bro from another mother, Janice. Tsk. Tsk.

2. A Creepy Crawly Campaign – The girls are tasked to shoot a fake commercial to promote Penang,  ”Where fashion meets nature” while millipedes crawl around their body. This is to test their composure, the way they react when they encounter unconventional props and other adversities.

Agreeably, Tia wins without any explanation from Joey and Adam. They have just announced the winner and that’s it. The assessment of each girl’s commercial has not been shown. I think this is really important if we want the girls to learn valuable things through out this experience.

The challenge is in no way connected to the overall episode theme and of course, the judging. This is just one way to promote Malaysia.

Anyway, Tia’s prize is a meal with Jimmy Choo. We are actually amazed that Jimmy is Malaysian. Again, the prize is not in anyway related to the challenge. It’s just so happens that Jimmy Choo is Malaysian and is currently in Malaysia.

3. A Yacht Ride and Nicole’s Feet – The girls hop on a yacht to go to an island resort called, Pangkor Laut, for their photo shoot. On the way, the girls lay down on their backs to enjoy the sun, the wind and the waves. Some girls especially Marie has not really enjoyed the ride because of Nicole’s smelly feet and her dirty, dirty socks. YUM. Looks like Nicole is not getting any shoe endorsements from now on. Kidding.

4. Yoga- The girls do yoga and this is just one of those incoherent parts of the episode. They say that it’s to prepare them for their photoshoot but my guess is this is to promote the resort’s services. JOKE.

5. Photo shoot- The photo shoot is held in four locations: the beach, garden of a spa village, the yacht and the sea suites. This is really a good way to promote the resort. Congrats.

Only 2 girls will shoot per location. The location is randomly assigned using draw lots. Nicole and Katarina getthe yacht. Jodilly and Sheena have the spa village. Lastly, Marie and Natalie, and, Tia and Josephine get the beach and sea suites, respectively.

Overall, the photo shoot is done well. All commend the photographer for giving a lot of energy and feedback. It translates to most of the girls pictures but some still fail to deliver.

**Star World had technical problems last night and we were unable to watch the show’s latter parts (e.g. deliberation of judges, call-outs and Tia’s goodbye, next week’s highlights). Tsk. Tsk.  Star World already apologized via Twitter.

Here is the order of call out.

Best Photo: Marie- Marie is becoming consistent since her make-over. She delivers different poses, shapes and facial expressions. The photographer and the judges are absolutely in love with her. I think her location has worked to her advantage since it is where a bathing suit is the most appropriate. I wish that the cropping of her photo has been wider to show her legs but otherwise, it deserves the top spot.

Josephine- Josephine has given what has been asked by the judges, which is a resort-wear campaign. Her pose and face are strong and fitting to the theme of the shoot. However, I think that this is still not her best. The photo is really simple for Josephine.

Nicole– Nicole is still consistent. The judges note that the shape she is displaying does not fit the background. I agree but what I want them to comment on is her facial expression. It just looks shocked, scared and dead.

Sheena- After getting frustrated over last week’s photo shoot, it seems like Sheena loses her confidence. This is observed by the photographer and it reflects in her photo. Her legs look strong but the facial expression is still the same face she gives each week. I think her location put her to a disadvantage.

Katarina- The photo looks like a beauty pageant swimsuit portion. As Mike notes, the photo looks good from the waist down. She is also hard to direct according to the guest judge.

Bottom Three

Natalie- Her photo does not connect and her face is expressionless. She is quiet, timid and weak, the opposite of what the judges want.

Jodilly- Duck Face. The shape that she is doing is okay but her facial expression ruins everything for the judges.

Eliminated: Tia- Tia’s photo shoot is difficult to watch. She does not take directions well but I think she is really trying her best. Her location also does not work for her. The location is so limited that you can only give a 2 dimensional shot.
