#AsNTM2 Episode 5: “The Girl that Runs Her Own Race” Recap

This week the girls go “sporty” as they undergo a physically demanding challenge and a photo shoot to go with it. Seemingly, the episode has so much elements crammed into an hour or less. This may be an advantage since the episode has not been boring but on the down side, judging scenes have been cut short just when the photos of the girls get interesting.

Maybe, Janice has eaten all the screen time. Joke!

Here are the highlights of the episode:

WARNING: SPOILERS AFTER THE JUMP

1. Thao’s Departure- Everybody thinks that Thao does not deserve to go home. Even Janice thinks so but she denies this to the other girls.

2. Fitness Challenge- The girls are surprised by Adam and Dan (trainer) early in the morning to exercise. They are caught offguard, especially Natalie and her #tmi braless moment. Afterwards, they head to a military camp where they meet Joey.

They are divided into teams. Marie and Josephine pick their teammates and leave Tia as the odd girl out. Tia is disappointed as she has expected that Josephine will pick her instead of Nicole. This is a lesson learned for Tia,

“You can only trust yourself.” (Tia, 2014).

And an even harder lesson learned for Jojo since Nicole is really too unfit to function (thanks Mean Girls!).

Obviously, Tia wins the challenge and she chooses Janice’s company to celebrate her prize, a trip to the spa. Note that this is after Janice talks sh*t about Tia, behind her back, on their way to the military camp.

3. Janice Gets Paranoid-

This week, Janice is the person to hate”. (Janice, 2014).

After hearing “voices” (of Sheena and Josephine) whispering behind her back, Janice gets paranoid and confronts Katarina, Jodilly, Nicole and Josephine. She asks if they are talking about her. They deny it and good thing, they understand her insecurities and crazy personality.

Nicole leads an intervention for Janice and assures her that no one hates her. It goes well until Nicole mentions that Janice and Tia are “best friends”. Apparently, they are not. They just get along the best but they are not friends (Janice, 2014). So many quotable quotes this week, huh?

Janice’s sh*t talking reaches Tia and she is awfully disappointed. Tia is just curious why Janice back stabs her. Janice defends herself by saying that whatever sh*it she has said, Tia already knows.

“I am who I am” (Janice, 2014)

Watch out next week for more Janice vs. the world. Janice is really a character that makes the show more fun to watch. More, please!!

4. Photo Shoot: “Sports-Themed”- The week’s theme is sports, a sort of futuristic sexy sports photo-shoot. Each girl is assigned a specific sport with a matching costume. Some we understand and some we do not. You’ll understand when you see the photos.

The location of the shoot is in, guess what, a photo studio. As simple at it may seem, the girls need to get used to being photographed in just a studio. In a studio, models are confined to a limited space and smaller frame. What they deliver often depends on their capability and not external factors like the sunlight and props.

Here’re the order of call out and my comments:

Best Photo: Natalie (American Football)- The photo is good. Her legs look good but the face is not really strong. It’s the same old Natalie face. However, the judges still dig it.

Jodilly (Table Tennis)- Jodilly is once again a runner-up. Her photo looks the most natural. Her timing is impeccable and her skin looks really nice in the photo.

Sheena (Football)- The photo is good. The pose and facial expression can be better. For me, Nicole deserves this spot better.

Nicole (Golf)- Nicole is the most consistent among the girls and she delivers every week. For me, this is one of tonight’s best photos.

Marie (Cycling)- Her prop is a cycling helmet but it does not show. The judges are disappointed considering her photo last week. Is last week’s best photo a lucky shot?

Janice (Baseball)- The judges think Janice is slowly growing and she has “swagger”, whatever that means. This photo for me is just a vertical version of last week’s photo.

Katarina (Tennis)- The photo is Katarina’s first shot, which is not good. The judges almost gets angry at her for being too safe and “not exerting too much effort”.

Bottom Four

Josephine (Boxing)- Jojo’s photos have been either safe and too extreme. The judges choose a safe photo that does not fully display the intensity of boxing as a sport.

Sneha (Hockey? or Polo?)- Sneha’s photo is just depressing. She looks old and the sportiness is really not conveyed. Personally, Sneha should have been eliminated. The judges should have considered that Poojaa has done well last week.

Tia (Basketball)- Tia is told that she has an attitude during the shoot. As a viewer, I think Tia has just explained herself and she does it in a respectful manner. I don’t know where the judges are coming from. Anyway, her photo has the old Tia face. The open mouth thingy. I think Sneha deserves this spot more.

Eliminated: Poojaa (Skiing/Swimming?)- I think no one know exactly what the assigned sport for Poojaa is. Nadya points that Poojaa looks like a scuba diver and during the shoot the goggles are referred to as “snow goggles”. The skirt suggests that she is on water. I am just confused. This is the same reason why Poojaa has gotten confused. She does not know what to do and in the end, she gives her signature hand on waist pose. This time with no neck and this has costed her the competition.

Hits

1. The episode is well edited. – You will not easily identify who will be eliminated. The episode is also exciting and has really emphasized the drama in the house.

2. Photo shoot- The photo shoot is not boring and the girls have had opportunities to dsplay their creativity considering the constraints.

Middling

1. I really miss Daniel Booey. It is painful to see Mike, Joey and Adam in every photoshoot and every challenge and seeing them again in the judging panel. The show needs a mentor that acts as a neutral ground like how Daniel’s role is last cycle.

Misses

1. The Challenge- The challenge is entertaining and could be valuable for the girls. However, the purpose of the challenge is not explained well. There should be lessons learned every challenge. The girls are not there to win trip to spas and resorts. They need to understand the reasons behind every challenge.

2.  Judging scenes have been shortened- This is by far the most exciting shoot. The photos could have been analyzed further by the judges and this has not been shown in the final edit.

3. Bottom Four?- Nadya decides to have a bottom four. She could have explained further why each girl is on the bottom. This could have helped them for next week and in Poojaa’s case, for her modeling career outside the competition.

NEXT WEEK!

  1. The girls will need to impress in a high-end party.
  2. Janice against the world- WOHOOO!!
  3. The girls go rough in a photo shoot in an automobile shop…with male models!

What do you think about the episode?

  1. Are you team Janice or team Tia?
  2. Do you think Poojaa deserves to be eliminated?
  3. Do you think Tia gave an attitude during the photo shoot?
